Our Story

17 years ago, Hothouse Yoga opened its doors in Coralville. Today, we honor each of you who have taken a leap of faith and joined this community. We have all overcome many fears-perhaps even just walking through the door-and joined together in movement and breath. May we continue to fuel our physical practices with asana and our mental practices with pranayama. May we all continue to grow and send more love and light into this world.

Mysore: Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga is the system of yoga founded by the late K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India and continued through the living legacy of his family Sharath, Saraswathi, and Manju Jois as well as his senior students and disciples.

Within the Ashtanga Yoga system, asanas are joined together through flowing movement co-ordinated with the breath (vinyasa), gaze (drishti), and alignment (bandha/mudra). There are six sequences of asanas (Primary, Intermediate, Advanced A, B, C and D) in the Ashtanga Yoga system which are practiced sequentially. Each sequence begins with the Sun Salutations and the same sequence of standing poses. All sequences end with the same finishing sequence. The postures which occur between the standing and the finishing sequence vary from series to series and are designed to strengthen the body, purify the energetic system and address the structural functioning of the body.
